How the face shape detector reads a square face
The face shape detector places 468 landmarks on your face and scores each of the seven shapes against published rules. Square starts scoring when face length is no more than 1.25 times cheekbone width and the jaw angle is 136.5° or tighter, with more points the tighter the angle. A jaw at least 0.885 of cheekbone width and a chin angle of 113° or wider each add points, and a longer face loses square points.
Each number describes something you can see. The tight jaw angle is the visible corner below your ear. A jaw at 0.885 of cheekbone width or more is what "nearly as wide as the cheekbones" means. The wide chin angle is the broad, flat chin. These are scoring rules rather than a pass mark, so meeting one adds to the square score without settling the result on its own. A strong diamond score sets square to zero.

Round has the same proportions but a soft, curved jaw. The measurement that decides it is the jaw angle. The detector scores square from 136.5° or tighter and round from 138° or wider, so a jaw that lands in the 1.5° between them is where the two are hardest to separate and where blended results appear. Square or heart
Heart narrows to a pointed chin; square keeps a broad jaw. The measurement that decides it is the chin angle. Square's rule adds points from 113° or wider, while heart's strongest condition is 100° or tighter.
