How the face shape detector reads a round face
The face shape detector places 468 landmarks on your face and turns the distances and angles between them into ratios. It starts scoring round when two published rules line up: face length divided by cheekbone width is 1.15 or less, and the jaw angle is 138° or wider. A shorter face scores more, and a chin angle between 105° and 125°, a gently rounded chin, adds points without being required.
That wide jaw angle is what "no corner below the ears" looks like in numbers: the jawline opens out instead of turning sharply. The rules add points rather than act as a pass mark, so a face can score on round and a neighbour at once.

Round has two neighbours, and each one differs from it by a single measurement.
Round or square
Square has the same proportions but sharp, angular jaw corners. The measurement that separates them is the jaw angle. The detector scores round when the jaw angle is 138° or wider and square when it is 136.5° or tighter, so a face whose jaw angle sits between the two is the classic round and square blend. Round or oval
Oval shares the soft jaw but is clearly longer than it is wide. The measurement that separates them is length. The detector scores round at a length-to-width of 1.15 or less, and oval from 1.18, so a face between the two scores on neither length band. What to avoid
Avoid chin-length blunt bobs and bowl cuts; they echo the round outline. A blunt line that ends at the widest part of your face repeats the curve instead of adding length.
Also avoid wide horizontal bulk at the sides. Volume over the ears adds width to a face that is already about as wide as it is long, so put the volume on top instead.
